Question by Mike P: How does a job reference work? Do you provide it or do they contact your old company?

Do you get a letter of reference when leaving a job and provide it with your CV? Or do the company you wish to work for contact your old company and ask for a reference?
I work for a very large global corporation, on a placement year in between university years 2 and 3. Will an employer contact a big company like this for details? Or just confirmed I worked there?

It depends on the company. Some companies will contact your previous employer to find out about you.

Usually you ask if you can use them as a reference or write a reference letter. If you use them as a reference, on a sheet of paper along with your resume and cover letter include a listing of references and their contact information.
