Whats the difference between series 1 and series 2 in basketball or baseball cards?

I notice that in baseball there are only like 300 cards per series and there are over a 1000 players. Does every player make it on a card and why does series 2 usually come out much later than series 1

Not sure if every player has a card. Series 1 is mostly a wrap up of last season and has the rookies that has signed contracts by the time the production window for the upcoming season closes.The 2nd series is usually for any changes in the line-up from about a month before the season starts and rookies that sign contracts after the season starts. Also, since there are so many players in baseball if a company tries to put out their product in one printing it would be hard for collectors to get their favorite players or teams without spending a lot of cash and time. The 1st series of most products has usually the better stuff since this makes the customer more willing to buy the 2nd series.
