What is the difference between a historical journal and primary source document?

Question by sbbyrne137: What is the difference between a historical journal and primary source document?

I'm working on my history IA, it is says that we need to use a historical journal, and then later says we need a primary source to reference. I thought that a historical journal was a primary source?

I think they are using the word "journal" to mean a periodical, not a diary.
